DAY 389 Still Up in the Air & Joy

Hello Journal & Friends,

I've only been on a plane ONCE in my life. And am definitely not a pilot. So it's funny to me to keep thinking about planes.

Last Friday I wrote about Little Planes and Big Planes (HERE)...
comparing our weight loss journey to flying, and what it took to get us up in the air and flying towards our destination. To sustain the energy it took to STAY up in the air, on course, and make it all the way.

Well,it was surprising... later THAT SAME DAY, I was listening to an audiobook by Stephen Covey. And he started talking about planes!

He talked about how planes are rarely exactly on course for long. It is a constant matter of course correcting! Checking their instruments, and making tiny adjustments in the heading. This was news to me!

I thought about that and saw how we need to do that, too. All throughout the day we need to be tuned in and aware. Not just once in the morning, but throughout the day's journey. We need to be paying attention, living NOW, in touch, correcting any thoughts that sneak in and try to lead us off course.

There will always be other people, circumstances, even thoughts, that offer us "reasons" to stray off course. But as Chris at A Deliberate Life  said in a recent post: The only thing standing between you and victory is you.

This is something I am still working on, so I like having this plane visual to help me remember to stay on course ALL day. In time, I hope it becomes second nature, and won't take so much mental energy. I'll admit, it can get tiring at times! But that's when I need to recharge my batteries, remember my passion, my Why.

And then there is joy. "The joy of the Lord is your strength."

Today's Peek at the Past (Well, I can sure identify with this paragraph. I was JUST thinking about the every-day-ness of it... that it's almost like being in maintenance, just keep on doing the same things over and over and over... and that is when I GOT IT. What my friend Mary has been telling me for months: to connect it with my passion, to do my passions NOW, in order to keep the energy and drive in my journey. The penny finally TRULY dropped!)

From Day 28, September 6, 2009:
I have a growing list of TO-DO's. I think it is important to have those out there like rewards, incentives, exciting motivations...especially for days when time seems like it's dragging (like today, ha!). Do I live NOW? Of course, as I am able at this current weight...that's not the point of these imaginings. They are there to help pull me along, and fill me with anticipation. It's fun to think of new things I will be able to do...it helps make it REAL!

From Dr Phil's book: "There is strength and power in support."

My verse for today: "Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love."

My quote for today: "A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor's book." --Irish proverb

Enjoy the Journey,

I can't believe how well the plane analogy works with weight loss! Knowing that they're constantly tweaking and monitoring their course makes it even more appropriate - loving it.

My plane stays up on the wings of friends. Appreciate all the encouragement this summer.

Yes, course corrections. Constant companions. Maybe you are meant to sprout wings then, Loretta. All the plane messages. :)

That makes alot of sense! In this case, my plane is forever landing and taking off, and never quite arriving. :-/

oh my goodness...in the movies the cockpit never looks that complicated.
I'd pass out.
little adjustments. yep.
connecting weight loss with your passion gives you reasons to keep moving forward. Awesome post.

I love that analogy! It's so much easier to make smaller course corrections daily than to have to make major ones later when we've gone way off course!

It's also cool to think about Strength coming from JOY... and JOY in the LORD. Makes me think of strength a little differently.

Thanks for your comments on my last post! I can't wait to earn that Century Club Badge!! :)

What a great post!!! My son actually wants to be a pilot (he's almost 18). I never thought of this journey that way...very thought provoking.

Great post, Loretta, and I love the weight loss/plane analogy. After a few days skimming the runway, I think I'm finally in the air again. :)

Hey I just ran across your blog and was looking for some advice. I am a new blogger and actually am starting to blog about my weight loss journey – I loved your blog. I will follow you and would love it if you can do the same and maybe send me some advice weather it be on blogging or weight loss (what a damn struggle).....Thanks so much. I loved the pictures as well and wish you all the luck in the world.

I LOVE the reminder to remain aware, pay attention, and try to stay on course all day with every decision! Planes are great. One of the bike trails Ramsey and I ride is a five-mile path that circles an airport. The view of the planes from the playground sucks though. There is another bike trail (with a playground, of course) nearby, and the view of the planes is amazing. Message: If you're stuck at the airport (yea, yea, I know: You're the one flying the plane - stick with me here), you might not realize how spectacular of a journey a plane has had. I'm watching your plane fly from the second playground, and it's amazing.
