DAY 460 Shoodles for Toon Tuesday

Hiya Journal & Friends,

Okay, I'll admit it... I'm a sucker for catchy names. So when I decided to decorate tennies with doodles, I just HAD to call them something fun.

 Hence: SHOODLES!

Shoes with Doodles. :-D  har har har

I got a great deal on white mule tennies (12 bucks a pair), so ordered 5 pair, all in white. I finally finished my first pair... and wanted to share pics of it, along with my MISTAKES!

I really DID think of this weight loss journey, especially while fixing my mistakes. The mistakes were frustrating, causing it to take a lot longer. But just because I was learning as I went and made mistakes, I didn't give up. I corrected... I learned... and kept my finished goal in mind. Honestly, I didn't drum that up... it really DID teach me another lesson. :-)

Without further ado... my first Shoodle!

Have you figured out my mistake yet??
Big boo boo to draw it in with pencil first!

It smudged, making it dirty looking,
and try as you might, the pencil shows
and you can't erase it. It took a LOT of
white acrylic paint to fix that goof up.
See this next one, especially in the
checks and around the star? Yuk.

Well, live and learn. Next time it will go faster.

There's no right or wrong way... so instead
of buying ribbons for laces, or using plain
white ones, I dyed these variegated shades
of yellow & orange. First watery yellow in
a glass jar; dunked them in... then dabbed
on some orangey color while still wet.

And ta da! My first finished pair of Shoodles!

PS: If you'd like to try your hand making your own Shoodles, check out my comment for a list of Hints.

Today's Peek at the Past (I almost skipped reading this one, since it was "just" a Challenge update, and today's post was long already. I'm glad I didn't skip it! I needed to be reminded of the level of commitment it takes to accomplish my goals.)

From Day 99, November 16, 2009:

"Friday was a close call... hubby came home early from work, and I almost talked myself out of doing it, figuring oh well, I can just do it Saturday. Well, duh! He will be here all day Saturday!  I realized I was just making an excuse to put it off, and not putting forth my best effort. So yes, I went ahead and cranked up the music and danced with Richard Simmons."

From Dr Phil's book: "Make time for exercise, then protect that time... NO EXCUSES. Let nothing interfere, absolutely nothing."

My verse for today: "Praise the Lord, O my soul... who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's."

My quote for today: "The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without the work." --Emile Zola (1840-1902)

Enjoy the Journey,

I stand in awe of your work...
You are a true artist!
What talent you have!
And here's me thinking
"She could sell those shoes!"
I think you can "doodle" anything!

Awesome shoes !!! You have inspired me to give this idea a whirl for myself. I have been in somewhat of a "creative desert" for a while, looking for a project that is fun and practical.Shoodles sounds like an awesome way to fill the bill !

Thanks everyone, I'm glad you enjoyed them!

One reason I shared the process with photos was in case anyone else might like to make some, too. So, here are some hints:

1. Draw your design on paper first, then just do it in Sharpies right on the shoe. If you have Fabric markers... more's the better! I might get some of those and try them.

2. Don't use expensive brushes... it takes a sort of scrubbing motion to get the paint down into the fibers of the canvas shoe... hard on the brush.

3. Don't worry about mistakes... more white acrylic paint is the "eraser" and then a new black line here and there fixes it right up.

4. When finished, don't wash them, ever. Tape off the rubber parts, then spray with waterproofing scotchguard stuff... if they get scuffed, just dab on some new paint.

5. I've found the first thing to start looking ratty are the laces. So for a facelift, simply get new clean laces!

6. I use regular acrylic paints... but you can use fabric markers if you have them. Might even work better! Part of the time, I added a couple drops of Textile Medium to the acrylics. It's supposed to make the paint work better with the fabric. Eh... didn't notice THAT much difference.

Hope you'll share pics of yours, for anyone doing their own Shoodles!

PS: or should they be called Snoodles??? Per Anne... sneakers with doodles = Snoodles!!

Loretta- I am a sucker for cool shoes. These are the coolest ever! You really could sell these, on etsy or the like. I would be your first buyer in a heartbeat. One of a kind beauties from a one of a kind woman! I'm especially impressed by how the mixed color effect really finishes off the whole project.

Awww... thanks Anne and YellowRose, for saying I could sell these. I actually WAS toying with the idea of opening an Etsy store, and taking orders for custom doodled shoes. I've never done that before, so don't have a clue. And details like, do they send me their shoes in their size? And don't have a clue how to charge, or how much, and all that. If any of you have experience on that kind of thing, I'd love to hear it. :-)

:O!!! Those are wonderful!!!!

Loretta, you absolutely SHOULD sell them.

It hadn't occurred to me that people would buy their own shoes and send them to you--but that could certainly be an option. That way fit wouldn't be an issue and pricing wouldn't have to be adjusted to shoe cost. You'd also eliminate the costs of stock.

The down side would be that people would have to actually buy and mail the shoes. Which would give them time to rethink the purchase.

I'd have to think on it, but right now the upside of people buying their shoes and mailing them to a P.O. box wins.

I no nothing about cost. If it were me, I'd google shoes and designer shoes and see what I find. Then I'd google custom, made-to-order crafts. That kind of thing.

I'd show pics of samples of finished shoes. I know you have at least 2. But you can also show samples of drawings that youi could apply tot he shoes. AND I'd give people the option of requesting designs--with the ability to refuse, of course. I was thinking like somneone asking for hearts or balloons or kittens.

You know (you've probably done this) I'd look at ebay or other online shops and see if custom clothes or jewelry shops are listed and what their prices are. Maybe a nice artist who has a site would give you pointers. First hand experience is priceless.

Sorry. Program planning and development is my thing--it kind of just spilled over to designeer shoes. chuckle.

LOVE the shoes! The laces were perfect.

Wow! You are so artistic! You always impress me, Loretta, :) I love seeing the process. You totally should look into having an online store!

We all make mistakes. Those of us who have seen success here learn from our mistakes and continue on the journey. We make a small correction, avoid the iceburg, and continue on toward our destination. Life changes, and this journey changes. We're saavy enough to learn and to keep up.
