DAY 346 Learning to Spit Out the Bones

Hello to my Journal & Friends,

When I was a kid, I remember hearing the saying: "Eat the meat and spit out the bones."

I didn't really know what it meant as kid, but now it's been a huge help to me as I visit various blogs. I can take what is helpful to me personally, and leave the rest.

"Eat the meat and spit out the bones."

Let's face it... not all ideas are created equal. And some are great, but they just aren't our "style".

I hope that is what people feel free to do with what I write here. I'm no expert at anything. I just share ideas that have helped me personally, or stuff that I am learning about.

We are all so different, with differing needs and situations. So there is NO one-size-fits-all on this journey to health.

The other simple concept that has helped me is one word: MODIFY

Instead of focusing on what I can't do, I focus on what I CAN do. I modify. I make it work.

Back when I first started exercising at 460 pounds, all I could do was lay on my bed, put on a Richard Simmons exercise tape, and pretend I was standing. I modified the moves, and followed along. I loved it! It was so much fun, and I fell in love with exercising to DVD's.

Now I have several different exercise DVD's, and until recently all of them were the "regular" kind, not Chair exercises. I just modified! It is so simple, there is no reason to say I "can't" do it.

Modify.

Don't like the original? Modify.

Can't use the whole idea? Eat the meat and spit out the bones.

Change it. Modify it. Take what works for YOU, and shrug off the rest.

You might be surprised at some of the blogs I visit. But I can almost always find SOMETHING of value... one or two sticks to take away and throw on my bonfire to keep the blaze burning brightly!

appreciate reading other blogs, and all the ideas and inspiration that people so generously share. And it helps to know I'm not alone on this journey, that others understand and go through some of the same things.

If you can only use a tidbit here and there from my blog, then that's GREAT! To me, it's a way to pay it forward. Just eat the meat, an' spit out the bones.

From Dr Phil's book: "Should it be true, then you must DEAL with it. If it's not true, kick it out!"

My verse for today: "I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me."

My quote for today: "If you think you're too small to be effective, you've never been in bed with a mosquito."

Enjoy the Journey,

Loretta

Cafeteria style - take what you like and leave the rest. Very good and thoughtful post. Also, the modifying. I can be so black and white in my thinking and behavior...all or none. But there is a lot of gray area to be investigated that can yield technicolor information!

Great idea! Blogs have little golden nuggets all over the place. Take what you need.

Yep, it's a bit like a buffet restaurant. There are always bound to be things you don't need or want, and you can leave it there, but looking among the picking's there is always some little nuggest you can use and enjoy. I think on a deeper level, people can always find something to relate to with one another, once we get past the varied ideas and experiences there is still that human soul underneath that essentially has the same needs, fears, joys, etc.

I frequently modify at yoga. Sorry you are missing your yoga DVD. Have you checked for an youtube videos you can do while it is on loan?

There is always the boxing!

You have a wonderful attitude Loretta and I really enjoy reading your blog!

Ok, that picture of the "Unicorn meat" is SO NOT RIGHT! But I do "spit out the bones " frequently. I just forget that more than I remember it.

I like to read about what other people do...I have run into things other people like that I do...but I have a tendency to really have my mind made up about what I do. I love blog reading for the people.
I like your blog for that very reason!
lol.
Good post.

Great post! :D That is precisely what I do. I take from each blog I read what I need and leave the rest for everyone else. And I hope that when others read mine, they are doing the same. :D

Did that make a darned bit of sense? lol

Great example of how to make things work for you. I modify all the time for my arms. Especially lately. I can't afford an arm / hand blowout right now. So, I've stuck to aerobics and making sure I don't overdo the arms. Modify to fit my life and my limitations and my needs.

Yup, no one thing will work for everybody. We all need to figure out which dress / shirt works best for us.

Glad you're figuring it out and aren't letting anything stop you. Doesn't that make you feel powerful?

Know what else is a great motivation? Realizing you only have 2 weeks left. Crap! I felt a sudden surge of stress there.
