DAY 508 The Boring But Useful CHECKLIST

Good Afternoon, Journal & Friends,

When I had my first hand surgery back in October of 09, they did something I found amusing... yet I was glad they did it.

Each person along the chain of events initialed my hand/wrist in ink... right on my skin. Including me, the nurses, and even the surgeon, all prior to the surgery. They were absolutely determined to get it right! Or, in this case left... it was on my left hand. ;-)

They had a checklist, and this was one way to make sure they didn't slice and dice the wrong body part. They didn't leave it to chance, to memory, or even to "procedure". They followed a checklist, and that checklist said that each person had to initial the body part to make sure it was the RIGHT body part.

Well... recently I read about a book written by Dr Atul Awande, titled "The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right." It was fascinating! And had a lot of the truths I could apply to my own journey.

Here are some excerpts, bolded emphasis mine, that I found interesting. It's long, but worth it:

"Despite showing (hospital) staff members of the benefits of using the checklist, 20% resisted stating that it was not easy to use, it took too long and felt it had not improved the safety of care. Yet, when asked an additional question - would you want the checklist to be used if you were having an operation - a full 93% said yes."

"In a world in which success now requires large enterprises, teams of clinicians, high-risk technologies, and knowledge that outstrips any one person's abilities, individual autonomy hardly seems the ideal we should aim for. ..what is needed, however is discipline...

Discipline is hard - harder than trustworthiness and skill and perhaps even than selflessness. We are by nature flawed and inconstant creatures. We can't even keep from snacking between meals. We are built for novelty and excitement, not for careful attention to detail. Discipline is something we have to work at."

"We don't study routine failures...when we look closely, we recognize the same balls being dropped over and over, even by those of great ability and determination. We know the patterns. We see the costs. It's time to try something else. Try a checklist."

"We're obsessed in medicine with having great components, the best drugs, the best devices, the best specialists - but pay little attention to how to make them fit together well""

"It somehow feels beneath us to use a checklist, an embarrassment. It runs counter to deeply held beliefs about how the truly great among us - those we aspire to be - handle situations of high stakes and complexity. The truly great are daring. They improvise. They do not have protocols and checklists. Maybe our idea of heroism needs updating."

So, being one always on the lookout for useful tools along this journey, I made myself a Checklist template with the stuff I'm working on each day. Like I mentioned before, I don't expect perfection each day. But I know me: if I have it written down, easily accessible, and can check it off as I go, I will accomplish MORE than if I were to try to remember it all hit and miss. I have the big size I want to keep, one for each month, in a notebook. But I also printed out a small "working" copy to stick in a pocket, or doodle on, throughout the day. Just to make it practical and doable.

And there is something in me that enjoys checking stuff off a list! So there is that fun factor, that sense of accomplishment.

At the end of 2011, I expect to look back and say "Wow! What a great idea that was... look at all I have accomplished. All these small daily goals added up to big changes at the end of the year!"

Try it, you might like it.

From Dr Phil's book: "It's about changing yourself from the inside out."

My verse for today: "Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good; sing praise to his name, for that is pleasant."

My quote for today: "If you never did you should. These things are fun and fun is good." --Dr Seuss

DAY 507 Day of Rest & Remember This Later

Hi there Journal & Friends,

Sir Winston Churchill has long been a favorite of mine. Did you know he was also an artist?

Anyway, he led his country during it's most darkest hours during WW II. He was a figure the British people leaned on, drew strength from... and he was like iron. I admire him greatly.

Right now, those of you just starting are flying high on the newness, that initial burst of enthusiasm. And that's great!

But later when the honeymoon is over... weeks for some of you, months for others, please remember this little poster.

Make it your own. Claim it. Joyful declare it! Be like Sir Winston Churchill, and set your face like flint towards your goal.

Regardless of the attacks on you... regardless of opposition... regardless of the circumstances... regardless of how you might feel... NEVER QUIT.

You may need to stop and reassess... you may take a detour or have a setback... you make need to make course corrections... you may need to discover that missing key component... you may need to pick yourself up from having fallen FLAT on your face!

I have done all of those.

But the one promise I made to myself, that I have allowed NO ONE or NO CIRCUMSTANCE to steal from me is:

I WILL NEVER QUIT.
I WILL NEVER GIVE UP.

Trust me, you will thank yourself later, LOL!
(Have you seen that t-shirt: trust me, I'm a blogger? Mwa ha ha ha)

Enjoy the Journey,

DAY 506 Part 2, A Shiny New Year Full of Possibilities

Hi there again!

Okay, I've had my "booty seep" and my coffee, and am ready to go!

I have one thing to say to anyone who stumbles on this blog, who is just beginning... well, this IS January 1st. So, it might happen. ;-)

Never quit.
Never.
Always continue, no matter what.
NO MATTER WHAT.

Do this for you, not for anyone else. And if you never quit, you will learn, grow and finally get good at what works for you.

What I write here is not from the perspective of an expert... someone with all the answers who has it all down. It's from the point of view of a student, one still learning. I write those things that I want to learn, that I want instilled in MY mind and heart. That I want to read and have influence ME.

I have nothing to offer other travelers, except Encouragement and Hope. I cling to those with an iron grip... and that is what I try to pass on to others.

There was a time in my life when no one believed in me. I had tried and failed so many times, why SHOULD they believe in me?? I don't blame them at all. Yet still, do you know how deeply painful that feels?

But one person, my doctor, told me he believed I could do this. I had known him for about 20 years, and he, too, had seen me try and fail. But one day he looked me in the eye and said "I believe you can do this."

That was powerful. Never underestimate the power of a kind word to another who is struggling.

Celebrate who they ARE, not who they are not. Encourage, cultivate and uplift them. Be kind and offer words that UPlift, not drag down. You never know what might come of those seeds planted in their heart.

Finally the day came when *I* started to believe I could do this. Yes, I still had to work out the "how". To find a method that would work for me. It's been a long, hard journey so far, but I will never quit, regardless of what anyone else thinks of me. This is MY journey, MY life. And I believe in myself, finally.

Today is the first day of the month, the first day of a brand new year.
So... weigh-in: 332 lbs.

That translates to 5 lbs lost in December. Finally going in the right direction!

Photobucket

And I did the tape measurement thing, and compared to last Jan 1st. Good news there: in 2010, I lost a total of 12.25 inches. Yay!

Sure, I wish I had made better progress in 2010... but there is no going back. There is only learning, growth, and going forward. So, on that note, on to my Checklist for 2011.

It's nothing new and exciting. Just stuff I know to do, and want to be CONSISTENT this year with.

That is my theme this year: CONSISTENCY.

-a focus on living fully and joyfully NOW, even as I travel towards my goal

Happy New Year, everyone!

DAY 506 A Shiny New Year Full of Possibilities, Part 1

Hello Journal & Friends,

Stayed up late greeting the New Year, so will do this in two parts. First, my Theme Song for 2011. I don't even really like watching boxing, but have always loved the Rocky movies... he is just so darned inspirational!

After I some winks, I'll be back to post my new goals for the shiny new year.

My Theme Song for 2011:
Eye of the Tiger!

Thank you, Chris. You helped me more than you know.

See ya later, alligator!
